MCD Global Health (MCD) is a public health nonprofit organization recognized in the U.S. and internationally as a leader and trusted partner. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of people worldwide through enduring, high-quality, cost-effective, and universally accessible public health solutions. We work in the realm of malaria, sanitation and hygiene, cervical cancer, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health, communicable diseases, health systems strengthening, capacity building, telehealth and technology, workforce development, and more in the United States and various countries in Africa.
Connecting Care: The Maine eConsult Pilot Program
With funding from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, MCD Global Health hosted a one-year eConsult pilot program with eight primary care organizations that utilized telehealth technology.
During the pilot, 481 primary care providers (PCPs) submitted 1,377 eConsults across 19 medical specialties. The average response time from the specialist was 16 hours. Remarkably, over 70% of these eConsults resulted in patients remaining within primary care, avoiding the need for a specialist visit.
Simply named Electronic Consultations (eConsults), the tool is a web-based system that allows a PCP and a specialist to securely share health information and electronically communicate about patient care. The provider-to-provider eConsult system reduces the need for unnecessary specialty referrals and physical trips for specialist visits as patient care is provided by the PCP based on guidance from the specialist.
MCD has a long history of improving access to health care for rural populations through technology.

😢We were told the same thing in Biorisk Management class, but exceptions are; if the MSC is his personal MSC so he will know how to handle it, and clean it afterwards. Because there are risks of contamination if after handling the MSC with the gloves and someone else comes to handle it without gloves.
